Two things about this video. I love the "vintage" Kitchen Aid mixer. My parents gave me mine for Christmas when I got my first apartment in 1975. It is still going strong! Also, David, I love your yard, all those wonderful plants!!!
The older KitchenAid mixers are fun - although mine leaks oil, but I'm holding on to it! Once I discovered the Metro beater blade for it...that was a game-changer : )
This isn't related to your current post, but to an old recipe of yours I found while googling "clafoutis." We just came back from a summer in Provence, and I had clafoutis with cherries, blueberries and apricots (my favorite).
You were referencing the Roger Vergé book "Entertaining in the French Style," which I have from when it was published in 1986. Of course I couldn't find it on the bookshelves and my husband said it was on the coffee table (under a pile of art books). Thank you for bringing back the memories of when we did get to go to his restaurant (we really were too young and poor) and when I did try to entertain that way. I loved "pottery porn" in your clafoutis article referring to his book. Absolutely right! It will provide a couple of fun days of reading for me. I haven't looked at it in years! It is gorgeous. Merci!
He was a lovely man and I remember when he came to Chez Panisse and came into the kitchen and was super gracious and friendly. I never ate at his restaurant but people said it was welcoming and warm. His book is really great - capturing a place and time. Cookbooks have changed quite a bit since then but it's a book that I still treasure and glad you like it too.
Thanks for your delightful video and for the intriguing recipe, David and Sami.
Mount Hagen Organic Freeze Dried is great quality instant decaf or regular coffee manufactured in Germany. It's available on Amazon and elsewhere in glass bottles and resealable pouches. Mount Hagen has Fair Trade and other certifications.
I love that you did all this in front of your fig tree! I was sad, though, that we didn't get to spend more time with the finished brownie! It looked like a delicious recipe!
It's an Instagram link and I tried to embed it (several times!) and it wouldn't work due to some glitch. I just tested the link in the post and it worked for me, but try here:
A lovely video. Thank you. I am wondering how the brownies came out with so much cloves! The recipe calls for so little, but Sami put what looked like a good tablespoon. We Americans use cloves so sparingly, so I'm curious about a more intense approach (also, it's quite novel to pair cloves with chocolate!)...
Very easy. Sami sometimes bakes it less (which I could tell from the picture in the book) so it’s more like a mud cake which you can spoon out, and eat right from the pan😊
I don't recall - it may have been 10-12 minutes? I am out in the countryside, eclipse watching(!) but mentioned to Sami that he's welcome to chime in and reply to any comments. So perhaps he can let you know ...
Yum! I plan to make these using my decaf cold brew or a decaf espresso in place of the water and skip the espresso powder…for those of us who might wish to enjoy a brownie in the afternoon and sleep at night! I know it may change the intensity of flavor but am willing to accept that.
Can we please keep our personal political feelings out of this wonderful site of David's? I realize I'm in the minority here since there are 8 likes, but please. And also that less than 3 sign off which I had to look up the meaning. Otherwise I'm outta here as a paid subscriber, "omggggg."
Thanks for chiming in. I'd like to keep the focus on Sami and his wonderful cuisine (and cookbook) that celebrates his heritage, which deserves its place in the spotlight. I'm happy to have him as a friend and was glad he came and baked for me, and showed off his talents.
Thanks everyone for keeping the focus on Sami, and his recipe : )
Yes, I like Sami and respect him. The issue is I have family in Israel and some were almost murdered 10/7. So I am sensitive to this, of course. There is no need for any of the kefiyyah people to promote their wishes on your site. I appreciate you keep your focus and wish more would as well. And long may Sami and Yotam live and cook!
You're so cute together! I love how Sami cooks!!
glad you liked the video and yes, cooking with him was such a pleasure!

First time getting a kind of full view of your garden/yard, beautiful. 🤩 That was an awesome video, even though I am not a sweets fan. 😎
Thanks for your delightful video and for the intriguing recipe, David and Sami.

I asked Sami to chime in on any comments about his recipe so hopefully he can add some perspective
You and Sami make me smile…and laugh. Thank you for the great video…and, as always, great recipes!
We had a lot of fun!
Those brownies look delicious and pretty easy to make!

how long did you bake it for to make it a more brownie like texture?

Decaf works well for those sensitive to caffeine. I recently saw a brand of coffee ice cream that noted on the label that they used decaf 😃☕️
Merci!
Very nice video, I enjoyed it! I will also try the recipe! Thanks!
omggggg these sound incredible! Thank you for the invitation to adapt - I am vegan and will have a go replacing the eggs and trying this!
Also, free Palestine <3
