Hello David. Greetings from the Camargue. I have a funny anecdote about the Carte Vitale. I have been living in France with my boyfriend for about 6 years. His last name is Vitale. I am diabetic so I am frequently in need of supplies at the pharmacy. The first time we went to the pharmacy, we were also picking up something for his mother, so I saw the big "Vitale" on the card. Another time, I went to a pharmacy in the center of Toulon with his brother. The brother needed to pick up a prescription and again, "Vitale'" was emblazoned across the health care card. It was probably a few months later when I realized that it wasn't everyone's name on the card, that the card was actually the "carte Vitale". Hope you are feeling well!

I'm so glad that you say it's confusing and nobody truly understands the system. I've had a carte vitale and a mutuel for a few years now, and never quite understand what's going on and who will reimburse me. It's a strange system where you pay upfront and then get reimbursed. Also it took a painful amount of time getting the carte vitale in the first place. We were constantly asked for the same paperwork over and over again. This combined with the UK having to issue SI certificates, to reimburse the French state for any treatments, makes it all very stressful. However, the service (once you get it!) is superbe. And the pharmacy will even diagnose your foraged mushrooms to tell you which are edible and which are not. I hope you get better soon.
