My daughter and her family were in San Francisco last week. After reading your newsletter about the bakery Arsicault, I emailed them your newsletter and encouraged them to go. Which they did, buying the chocolate chip cookies and croissants. They were totally blown away by how fabulous it was.
Hey, David! SF is one of my favorite places evvah! having gone to Cal in the late '60s, before Alice Waters. I visit my college roommate regularly, and a couple of times we have thought to eat there, but it was too hard to get a reservation (poor planning on my part.) Next time!!!
Quick question about Philip's (Pullman) Brownies. The last thing I made with my new Pullman pan, Blood Orange cake, tasted fantastic but came out goopy in the middle. I thought the 3 holes in the middle of the pan were blocked off, so maybe that contributed to the goopiness? Anyhoo, in the interest of science, I used a metal skewer to poke holes in the paper for Philip's Brownies. Do you think that is a good idea?
I don't quite know about 3 holes in the pan (I've never seen that, so can't advise). I've only made the brownies in a standard loaf pan and they work well in that.
Good morning, David Thank you for your excellent post as always. My husband and I are heading to France for the 79th DDay Anniversary Celebrations and a few days in Paris. Recently, I had a ‚David Lebovitz‘ Day; making Phil‘s Brownies for a friend, Tuna Melt for lunch and Stuffed Pasta Shells for dinner-ALL outstanding. Safe travels home and Blessings to you and Romain, Marianne
I went yesterday to paris (to eat bread and see art between classes) and saw where I was practically no sign of protest. some graffiti on la Bastille. After I told my family about the protests my dad was concern but I was ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Anywho Mamiche was delightful, thanks for the recommendation.
My son and family live in Margaux, outside of Bordeaux. I go twice a year for a visit. Last time he asked me to bring Hormel pepperoni! Other items that crowd my suitcase are Twizzlers and Ranch bottled dressings. Of course I have developed the same habit of taking back things I can’t get here. 🤣🤣
Hi David -- we returned from a week in Paris last night. Took a taxi from CDG to our hotel with no trouble. Walked everywhere (who wants to be underground in that beautiful city?!) to the tune of 7-8 miles per day. Walked by the protest on Tuesday (reminded me of a NYC parade). Favorite restaurants Pouliche and Le Fumoir, very different experiences. Can’t wait to return! Love your newsletter.
Glad you had a good trip without any disruptions. When they standardized taxi fares, that changed a lot and I think it helped a lot of visitors (and locals) knowing that the fare would be fixed. Making the taxis accept credit cards also helped, too!
David, You’re the absolute best! I can’t tell you how many of your recipes are woven into our family meals both everyday and for special occasion feasts. Thank you! ♥️
First of all I have to say your posts seem to get better and better if that is possible! Arisault is in the neighborhood I just left. Their bacon scones are my favorite. I was at the Ferry Building farmers market today, they had the wild garlic. I went back after lunch to buy and it was sold out... hopefully they might have at Marin Civic Center market tomorrow. Can't wait for next post from you.
There’s an Arsicault Bakery in Civic Center that doesn’t really ever have much of a line, so you can take your time. The quiche is very good (if you like onions), and the ham & cheese croissant is fresh and hot out of the oven (they warn you not to dive right in unless you want a burned mouth) if you go in the morning.
I laughed when you mentioned people in LA being astonished at your boldness in trying to see the city as a pedestrian. I visited LA in 2006 when my husband was attending the AIA convention for architects. While he went to his meetings I, also boldly, and dressed in what I thought was my cutest LA outfit, asked the woman at the hotel desk for directions. When she started telling me how to get to my destination on the freeway I told her I planned on walking. I will never forget her look, astonishment puts it mildly, it was more like I was an alien with 4 heads and she needed to run for cover lest she catch my strange alien walking disease! 😂
"Chalices of grease"...so very evocative....and yummy. Thanks for that mental picture!

Ordered Michael Ruhlman‘s new book. I like his approach to living, cooking and his charming wife.
Scandia, she echoes and drop into a food memory reverie
Can you give details for Romain’s Art Show on April 14th- time, place, etc. Would love to attend. Thanks
hi Tina: He just posted details here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CqjQjmLo6CA/?hl=en

Ah the mere mention of Scandia brings tears to my eyes. It was wonderful and my all time favorite restaurant!

One thing they say that's good for getting over jetlag is daylight, so it is nice to walk around and absorb some of it!
