Thank you for the newsletters. I enjoy all of your writing. I have been making ice cream from your Perfect Scoop book. I have made the vanilla and chocolate (OMG!). Now on to Rum Raisin. What is your recommendation for a dark rum that I can purchase in Bellevue Wa USA area. I have Meyers Rum but I want to use something you recommend!!!
I've read Your Table Is Ready and, while an interesting read, you'll never feel the same about NYC wait staff again. Hope it was different at Chez Panisse. Also hope you and Romain have an enjoyable vacation!
It hasn’t been too hot in the Smoky/Blue Ridge mountains where I live in North Carolina but I despise summer regardless. Having been raised in sw Florida I just can’t handle heat and humidity!
Enjoy your vacation and I look forward to seeing your fabulous words in September! I loved Little Fires Everywhere and have Crying in Hmart on my Tbr pile. Have fun and lots of ice cream.
Bons vacances! It always made me laugh when our (French) friends would shut their restaurant in August to go on holiday. When I asked why they went at the busiest time of year, rather than November or January, when they often had no customers, they looked horrified and said, but we need a holiday too! Makes French sense!
Enjoy your Vacation with Romain !! I hope you have a few fig’s on your fig tree when you return... I’m leaving town and my precious fig tree will have produced it ‘s first crop. Hoping to get a few from the second crop. I don’t think it will be a fig jam year here in PDX :(
When I tried to have a nice meal on rue Montorgueil last year, the street was so crowded that it was impossible to "stroll" and most of the eating places seemed to feature drinks and bar food. It was a different world from the charming rue Montorgueil I first visited five years ago. Have you noticed a difference?
I live about 10 minutes from Montorgueil and you are right, it’s become a tourist magnet in the past few years. I still head there for Storer pastries and a few good restaurants; G detou is mandatory for certain special items. But David shouldn’t be telling folks about my little corner of the haut Marais, at rue de Bretagne! We don’t need more visitors!
Yes, the street has become a LOT busier. (And at night, noisier.) But it's a good street to visit as there are a lot of pastry shops, bakeries, cheese shops, and G. Detou, all in one place. The restaurant scene can be hit or miss but there is a Breizh Café for buckwheat galettes (crêpes) and L'Apibo is nearby, which is quite good.
Put The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese. The audiobook is read by the author and his voice enactments are almost poetic. India from early in the 20th century and on (I am only at 1960) is the backdrop. I am thirsting Lessons in Chemistry, a shorter read and highly entertaining for those who lived in America before women were equal…..oh, wait, has that happened yet? Have a great vacation!
Bonne rentrée!

Bon Vacances! Looking forward to your newsletter upon your return when you fill us in on where you went and what you did!
This newsletter inspired me to book a trip to Paris in 2 weeks. Staying near Cirque d’Hiver and can’t wait..
If you like Middle Eastern food, give Kubri a try which is right in that neighborhood :)
Thanks - made a reservation....

Have a wonderful time away. I hope it is restorative.
