We love a good Negroni, although we tend to switch to a Negroni Sbagliato or a Campari spritz during the summer months. Looking forward to many more when we move to Lucca this summer (and you would be welcome to join us for a cocktail if you're in the area, once we've settled in to our new home).
Sorry for changing subject but I am a subscriber with plans for visiting Paris soon. Can you please remind me where to get your list of recommended restaurants?
Citrus are in full swing here in San Diego and I had a delicious blood orange this morning for breakfast. This is definitely on my list to make this week! Thank you!
I love that you're buddies with Brian Hart Hoffman! I just attended the Swedish baking class he hosted with Nichole from Kantine and it was so much fun to watch; his passion for baking and life in general really comes through in his instruction.
Hi, David! My freezer is always packed solid, too. In cold weather it's crammed with soup, which I may eat twice a day and expect to have on hand in variety. In hot weather I lose the ice cube bin, otherwise used as extra freezer space, because I want ice cubes and room for homemade ice pops.
The name of your friend's magazine is correct in the boxed link, but in the text you called it Baked from Scratch. It's "Bake from Scratch." An impressive publication with terrific photos. I think the type is too small, though. A current article (available on website) on small-batch baking looks intriguing.
Regarding blood oranges, once I learned that they were also called raspberry oranges, that's what I preferred to call them. This is a more accurate description of the color, too.
Negroni have a special place in my taste memory. It was the Washington, DC summer of the “italian boyfriend” phase of my misspent youth at a garden party at the home of the Italian Ambassador. I was wearing a fabulous black and white polka dot summer “frock” with matching hat and the first time I experienced the value of a beautiful hat for getting the attention of the bartender - and my first Negroni….maybe not something that’s best suited to a hot humid DC afternoon but felt very glamorous (and managed not to fall off my shoes).
Oh David! Of course, our original champagne coupes would come back in fashion again, 20 yrs later, after we replaced them with flutes! Savior: our local consignment antique shops! Get 'em while they're available!
Great sounding cocktail! My freezer, in my side-by-side, 22year old fridge, conked out more than a few months ago. New fridge ordered, but we’re “refreshing” our kitchen, so now I want to put the fridge delivery on hold until the kitchen is done. No sense in moving it twice. In the meantime, I’m grocery shopping more frequently since I can’t freeze anything. Oh well, not the end of the world. Enjoy your mini-freezer!

Hi Denison: The list is here:

There's also a category of Paris restaurants here in the newsletter: https://davidlebovitz.substack.com/s/paris-eating-and-drinking
Have a good trip!
I'm picturing you walking home from Darty toting a freezer on a dolly!
Je vais essayer cette recette avec de la vodka. Je ne suis pas une fan de gin 🤗
New Alchemy Distilling (in California) makes Fleurette Vermilion Gin. It's a floral gin, and a beautiful red color.
I love this! I love Negronis and I have a blood orange tree! This was the best year for it yet so I have plenty !

Trying immediately! I recently made a batch of Aviation cocktails for a party and it's all used up. Time to restock my freezer with a new sip.

Fixed!

We are a two-fridge/freezer household and I'm either frustrated that the freezers are too full or anxious that they're not full enough.
Well, every time I freaked that my freezer was/is too crowded, it's actually more energy efficient to keep the freezer full!
Your freezers and mines seem to belong to the same family...

Speaking of freezers! I live alone and have a second, stand up freezer in my laundry room. Packed.
Speaking of gin! Have you ever come across a gin from Normandy called C'est Nous Francais? It's available in Canada but only in Quebec.
Speaking of freezers and gin! I freeze my gin. 🍸🍸🍸
