I’ve removed myself from all social media but Substack, and now I feel even it is being invaded by creeps. Thankfully I can use the button to see only those writers I subscribe to. I’m trying hard not to wallow in sorrow since Nov. 5, but it is difficult to recognize that few people care about the greater good and humanity in general.

I always like reading your stories about Paris. We relocated to the Marche, in central Italy, about 7 years ago, and love it here But although we live in Italy, not France, many of our issues are similar. We too prefer to buy produce from local vendors rather than the supermarket. Italy subsidizes farm production - farmers pay almost no property tax, and the income tax on agricultural income (including wine and olive oil) is much lower than the tax on regular income. So our produce prices are lower. The other day I picked up 2 kilo of apples and late season plums for a total of 4 euro from a local farmer's market. (Of course, those low prices are only for seasonal products. If you want blueberries out of season, they're a lot more expensive, if you can find them at all.)

I was also interested in the article you linked to about the San Francisco couple that was unhappy in Nimes. I laughed out loud when she complained about the supermarket produce - she seemed unaware that farmer's markets existed. But their biggest problem is that they didn't seem to have learned the language. You don't have to be fluent in the local language - I'm sure not. But how can you expect to make friends when you can't converse with them except by pointing?

Moving overseas is a challenge, as you well know. But if you don't commit to learning the language, it's unlikely you're going to have a good experience.
