Hi David, your flower box thief reminded me of a similar story that happened at my neighbourhood French restaurant in Chicago many decades ago. It was a casual neighbourhood place with a bar in front and the restaurant in back. The chef/owner was a no-nonsense Parisian that you really wouldn't want to mess with. One night when we were hanging in the bar, some drunken twenty-something guys walking by pulled up the plants from the flower boxes. The chef/owner chased them down the street and punched one or both of them and got the plants back. They actually had the nerve to hunt down some cops and bring him back to the restaurant to press charges. Chicago cops are generally too busy to deal with minor issues. Once they heard both sides of the story, with a bar full of witnesses, they considered the matter closed and threatened to arrest the thieves instead.

Just lovely to read your news and ideas, David. We are hoping to be back in France (from Melbourne) in late April 2022 for a month - heading down to the SW as usual. We missed our opportunity in May this year. Even after visiting France for 35 years I still learn every time and find your posts, market videos and books to be endlessly useful. Am very much looking forward to shopping at Marche Victor Hugo in Toulouse in May.

I can just picture you running after this Parisian yuppie, who stole your precious ivy. That’s awful though!

Not only do I adore your food ideas and tips, but very much get a kick out if your writing about such unusual experiences!

Good luck with Part Deux!!

Please don’t let this dreadful person dampen your day. I have a friend who lives in Boston who mulches her flower boxes with chards of glass! Thanks for brightening our day with your newsletter.

We had a dear friend who used to say, "People are the worst!" Seriously, who steals ivy off a wall? Thank you for sharing your adventures and recipes.

Oh and as a PS, the last time I was in Paris my phone was pickpocketed right out of my purse so I know all about Paris City of Thieves firsthand.

Hi David, I can sort of understand but definitely do not condone the theft of your plants, but ripping the ivy from the wall is just mean spirited vandalism pure and simple. That being said, after reading L’Appart I cannot imagine how you could contemplate L’Appart part 2. Maybe you should teread part 1 before making a decision on this. And in the meantime plan cacti in your flower boxes. I love the newsletter/blog but as a paid subscriber confess to being confused about which are free and which are not. In any event I always look forward to receiving your messages and particularly enjoy the snippets about your life in that amazing city.

I ran into a similar problem with plants in my window boxes in Boston. I was never able to catch the culprits. It would happen around holidays, Mother's Day, Christmas wreaths were another target. I just figure that it's part of city living.

Love your newsletter. I find it easy to read, well written and useful. Some newsletters are filled with too many links and even ads, and I have not renewed them or I unsubscribed.

I love the pictures you post as well. Sorry about your ivy. I can see someone maybe stealing a plant (absurd as that is), but ripping ivy from a wall? That’s awful. I’d be so mad about that.

I look forward to l’appart part 2. We have moved from a big house to a smaller house and getting rid of stuff was so freeing. A lot of work however! We are 61 so we had accumulated a lot of stuff. I got rid of kitchen things I now regret and actually purchased again, so there’s that too. Easy to get carried away I guess.

David, I agree with all the comments below…I LOVE the newsletter as it is…I am thankful that you weren’t injured in your pursuit of the thief. I don’t understand dishonesty as you described…after two trips to Paris this year, I look forward to another planned next June. Blessings on this holiday season to you and Romain…Marianne

I would be happy to mail you some nice Northwest Oregon poison oak. You "should" plant the starts in your planter box. Lovely to look at! Pretty fall colors too. But for anyone who plucks them, karma awaits. :)
