I love mackerel! I can't wait to try this. I've been enlightened to the glories of tinned fish after a couple of trips to Spain and Portugal, where they are delicacies.

Wow! David this is a great recipe that points people to buying tinned fish that is not tuna. Outstanding zip!

Oh David I so want to like these but my last experience buying French mackerel in a tin was a stinky downer. Luckily my French visitors loved it but I thought it was pourri ! Banh !

I've been looking for more ways to eat fish that's high in omega-3s, and this was SERIOUSLY delicious! Have now bulk ordered tin mackerel to put this in regular rotation.

David - I use Paprika 3 to save and organize my recipe downloads. Your new approach to posting them (I am a paid subscriber) doesn't work to download to the app. Any suggestions? Other than manual entry?

Thanks for subscribing! I've not used that app but people have suggested it in comments as a good way to save recipes. Maybe someone who uses it can chime in to help?

Just made this and it is very good and quite easy to make. Excellent with the slaw. Will add a bit more heat next batch. I just dropped my mixture directly into the hot oil...as I was starving (the cats were going nuts too), and it all stayed together great. Cats not happy to just get canned cat food though.

Thanks for the report back!

Wow, this is insanely good! Was amused to hear about your go to mackerel lunch which was my routine for at least a decade until I HAD HAD ENOUGH. But, you have joined man and fish in holy mackerelamony. Thanks!

I am korean and my husband is Jewish. He was brought up strictly Kosher but learned to love simply grilled salted mackerel.

Not as popular as pork based kimchi stew but canned mackerel kimchi stew is quite popular in Korea as well especially when camping out.

I don't think mackerel patties are as popular as canned tuna patties but I'd love to try this recipe.

BTW, US government lifted the requirements for covid test when traveling back to US. So happy as I am heading to Paris and Corsica in about 2 weeks. :)

I can’t wait to try them. I thought I had mackerel but I only have sardines but I will pick up some mackerel and try these next week.

I made this tonight and it was delicious. I had some leftover garlic scape aioli so I combined equal parts gochuchang and aioli with the a generous squeezing of lime juice for serving. Mayo would work as well.

Did the book mention canned fried dace, which apparently is an iconic tinned fish beloved by Chinese worldwide since the 1890's? Here is a YouTube from my favorite Chinese cooking vloggers on the history and uses of tinned dace (well worth watching): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEC5ZfsOYp0&ab_channel=ChineseCookingDemystified

I haven't used it yet but it's next on the docket in my kitchen!

Hi David, you've given me a reason to make a pilgrimage to our local Asian store in search of the gochujang. (It involves taking the bus, so I don't go often.) I've gotten into canned and homemade fish rillettes and tartinades the last couple of years, but haven't tried tinned little fishes other than anchovies. This sounds really interesting!
