Exactly what will "notes" contain that your newsletter doesn't?

I'm not sure but for the moment it seems like a happier place than Twitter (and Facebook) to post pictures and short thoughts that aren't enough for a full newsletter post. I tend to be an early adopter so am trying it out.

I am not happy to be paying for a newsletter that is becoming more complicated and less user friendly. I don’t have time to go from link to link to link.

Is it necessary to make this more complicated and time consuming to just enjoy your notes, stories and recipes?

Thanks for your message and thoughts.

If you're a subscriber to the newsletter you'll be getting newsletters sent to you as usual; through the app or via email, whatever your preferred way of getting them is. Nothing will change. Yay!

Notes are a separate thing and according to Substack they don't get sent out to people unless you've opted in to get them.

You can go to your settings here and toggle how you want to receive them (and anything else) but I'm pretty sure the default for Notes is off:

Hi David: will you be renting out your previous apartment or giving it up completely?

David, thanks for initiating the Substack notes.

Newsletter great, paying for your work OK, Substack is this necessary, now Notes, maybe not.

Not everything is for everybody and as I mentioned, I'm just trying it out. I don't mind (and like) trying new things, like blogging (back in the 1990s!) as well as Snapchat (which was fun at first, but got too complicated) and other social media. But all this stuff can be a lot so best to figure out what works well for you. I'm giving it a try.

Not sure where to post.

Asking for a recommendation of your favorite digital kitchen scale that can be bought in the US or ordered online. Batteries vs plug in? (I've seen some reviews about difficulty changing batteries or batteries don't last) Accuracy over time? Cleans easily?

This is the scale I've been using for years and it's great: https://www.davidlebovitz.com/my-kitchen-baking-scale/

They're not available in Europe (surprisingly!) but I got mine in the US and you may be able to order if from the UK if you live in Europe.

I’m thrilled you’re trying this and loved your explanation. I’ve posted or relied a few times to your IG and never got a comment. Felt bad. Hope this improves communication! Thank you!

There's a lot of comments and especially DMs in Instagram and unfortunately I can't get to all of them. I get very (very) long messages on IG asking for everything from restaurant recommendations for special occasions in Paris to where to stay in Scotland (!) so I can't get to them all. But I try to reply to all messages here on the newsletter where it's easier for me to keep track of

I get that. Thank you! I just want you to know I am a huge fan. Love your books. Make your recipes, especially ice cream, all the time. You’re such an inspiration to me. Thank you! Thank you!

I am wondering the same - will this be instead of your posts and live videos on Instagram? I see that I’ll get an email from you of a new post on Notes (post-it-notes!) and then it’s up to me to check for your or followers’ additional comments on any particular note if I wish - similar to IG. Glad to hear there will be no ads!

Okay, just saw your explanation above, thank you. Sounds like I won’t get an email when you post (I was okay with that as a paid subscriber). I just went into Notes and saw there were many of other people’s Notes but scrolling through, I did find some others of yours. Will check out notifications.

I like Instagram and don't plan to stop using it but a recent post yesterday was shown to 20k of my 307k followers. Ditto with Facebook; a similar number was shown to my FB followers and it's kind of irksome. But both have evolved into something else so I'm using Facebook a lot less, and Twitter hardly at all. Last week Twitter blocked Substack-related Tweets and didn't allow people to even 'like' or share them.

Thank you for your reply! My response below was referring to your reply to TheLadyJAK. I can understand how frustrating this must be re: IG, FB and Twitter and hope this method of social media will be much better. I don’t use FB or Twitter, just IG so was not aware of these issues. Sounds like they want to drive people away instead of encouraging.

So this is instead of… instagram? Do we have to check in to see what’s posted, is it pushed out in an email? Sorry for the confusion, this is the first I’m hearing of Notes

It's closer to what Twitter was when it began. If you have the Substack app, it's part of it and you can check in on Notes using the little icon on the bottom of the screen, circled in the post.

According to the page below, you won't get an email when a Note is published but will get a digest of Notes occasionally, which you can disable (also shown how to do, below). It also lets you know how you can enable and disable push notifications on your phone:

I did just go to that page and there's a broken link so I've asked Substack to fix it and to look into another issue regarding the page. I think they've had a busy week with all the publicity but hopefully things will be restored shortly.

I was sleuthing around and found this page so it may be here where you can change your settings: https://substack.com/settings
